You fall again, see you cry
Wait for relief in the daylight and go
up from the ground all the stars are too high
and all your fears of the world are now streamlined
in the desolate glow of the streetlights outside
Don’t fall asleep alone in this
You shouldn’t have to awaken inside
You know you’re still a dream, don’t you, sunshine?
In this wind pushed aside
you lose the smile that you swear by and now
you count again on me to be there in time
Put all your trust in the weather
I’m sure that you can do better
But if you awaken scared and shaken
undressed before the witchhunt roll call
when McCarthy brings his gavel down
with “Are you now or have you ever?”
bend but don’t fall for that ‘some things are sacred’ talk
It’s all to do with ability and I was born to commit that heresy
And though your fears of the world might be realized
you can bet that they don’t know that you are mine, so try
Don’t fall asleep alone in this
You shouldn’t have to awaken inside
You know you’re still a dream, don’t you, sunshine?

Forget the Forget

Can you feel us drifting?
It’s the lack of light
and the camera’s sleepy eye
slowly tracking off line
But while the feeds are changing
the satellite dreams on
and no one’s looking
but someone might
That bad moon’s been sleeping around
just to forget the forget
She says, “I’m this time
but no more.”
And she’ll smile that same smile
just to let me know
But to keep the moment going
I turn around again
I’m a string of hopeful words
tied off too tight with a knot I invited in
Your intent is in your eyes
and it throws my shadow on the wall
Satellite information coming in
makes your real defenses hard to detect
While the tension mounts on
you run maneuvers in the desert sun
as I push past the line
and pass resolutions and hope for more time
But our missiles have flown…
Wake up
Wake up
Wake up
Wake up
and forget the forget
forget the forget

I could sit and stare at you for hours
plotting desperately for some way to bring you around
acting actively seditious if I were found
A little like a bomber inside Parliament
planting wishes in the basement underground
lost and dated in a top hat and trenchcoat, now
always fated to be there when the gate comes down
That fire is me
That effigy
It shows you take what you can get
and hope the suckers take the blame
and I can see
that you would agree
by the size of the crowd that’s gathered for me here
on Guy Fawkes Day
I know every inch of you, it’s tragic
I’ve walked the distance from your lips to that uncrossed line
mapping out all of the reasons you should be mine
A little like a rifleman behind the fence
no one knowing it’s my bullet that takes you down
a quick re-program as they’re rushing me out of town
no way to prove that it was me when the hit comes down
That fire is me
That effigy
It shows you take what you can get
and hope the suckers take the blame
and I can see
that you would agree
by the size of the crowd that’s gathered for me here
on Guy Fawkes Day
Do you remember November?
Gunpowder, treason and plot?
I know of no reason why
I should ever be forgot
I am just a bomber inside Parliament
laying gunpowder and throwing the matches high
I know it’s treason but I’ll never apologize
plotting one more time to bring your breached walls down
That fire is me
That effigy
See the size of the crowd that’s gathered for me here
on Guy Fawkes Day
See the size of the crowd that’s gathered for me here
on Guy Fawkes Day
I’m all alone so blame it only on me

It Was Something

She sends the quotes out to the papers
She makes herself up for the shows
Not for the first time she refuses to give
there's just some things she’d rather keep for her own
He takes a call and tells his story again
He shrugs and rises to go
It’s so important the illusion be kept
that it was something worth troubling out to know
Some things are good when they’re left alone
Some things you shouldn’t bring back home
But it’s too late now
Like thirty years inside a pinhole
their perfect hands kept perfect time
and all of those who were witness to love
would’ve said that the feeling seemed real enough
But time moves slower in the real world
and things get stranger once the cameras shut off
and though they struggle it’s apparent they’re wrong
It turns out it was nothing after all
He tried his best to infuse it with heart
She tried hard not to confuse it with love
But in the end after all it's just
good bye, so long
He calls tonight to say he’s sorry
She reassures that it’s okay
They’d both agree that it was something
and at least for those five months they had something in common
Some things are good when they’re left alone
Some things you shouldn’t bring back home
And in the end after all, it’s just
good bye, so long
and it's good bye, so long
and it's good bye, so long

1985 by the Get-Go's

I never thought I would meet up
with someone who thinks like you do
But there was something in your eyes, I admit
it got a hold of me too
and now I’ll fall from the mountain
like something you’ve forgotten
just to let you know you’re alive
And if we ever get together
I know it will be better
in 1985
While we’re living underwater
we'll see them building homes on the sun
and we’ll think back to all the times we could keep
if we had only begun
back when I gave you one more time
to see you should be mine
instead of waiting 20 years to decide
And while they’re changing the weather
you've got to know I’ll be there
in 1985
in 1985
When you see me don’t ask why
I couldn’t act more dignified
way back when in ’65
Believe me I will let you know
better than I did before
And I will fall from the mountain
like someone you’ve forgotten
just to let you know you’re alive
And I can promise that forever
you’d better know I’ll be there
in 1985
in 1985

Did I hear you say
that you knew me well?
Well, that scrap of me you found
hardly recommends itself
Say you’re not that kind,
say you’ve got no time for thinking charity
But I’ll keep the lights up high
to hide any fault you see in me
Come and wish upon my star
They’re so impressionable where you are
But I’m not about to let you fall asleep alone
No
Hey, we’ll be so strong
Hey, when we get home
So go ahead and say
that you know me well
